Yamazakiya's main shop stands in the covered Higashimuki shopping street, a short detour from Kintetsu Nara Station before or after Kōfuku-ji. Its focus is narazuke, vegetables repeatedly matured in brewing lees, but the store also stocks other sweets, alcohol and local gifts. It is useful for a visitor who wants a range of packaging and serving sizes rather than a single preselected souvenir. The company says it has made narazuke since the beginning of the Meiji era; that is its own commercial history, distinct from the much older culinary tradition. This guide covers the main shop at 5 Higashimuki-minamimachi, not the company's other branches, online checkout, gift corner or upstairs cafe as separate entries.
Choose the size before the flavour
The operator sells whole gourd, cucumber, watermelon and other vegetable pickles as bags, boxes or barrels, plus small chopped packets and mixed gifts. A small bag makes a more practical first taste than a large gift box if luggage and dietary restrictions are uncertain. The official online page checked on 19 October 2026 showed a chopped gourd/cucumber small packet at ¥500 including tax, a half-gourd daiginjō product at ¥1,250, and a broader assortment at ¥4,260. These are web examples, not an in-store inventory or current checkout guarantee. The operator warns that product lines differ among its shops, so ask at this branch for the size and exact ingredients you need.
How the shop says it makes narazuke
Yamazakiya describes salting a harvested gourd on the same day, then changing its sake lees and mirin lees repeatedly; it says the full gourd process takes roughly one to two years and five lees-pickling stages. This differs from Mori Naraduke's sake-lees-only recipe, so do not assume every Nara maker follows an identical method. The pickles absorb alcohol from brewing ingredients. Anyone avoiding alcohol should check the exact product label or ask staff; neither the word 'pickle' nor a sweet taste proves it is alcohol-free. Health-benefit claims on the operator website are not presented as medical facts.
Look beyond one producer's pickle
The main-shop page lists confectionery, sake and other Nara souvenirs as well as its own narazuke. It also says a Nara gift alley opened at the back and an upstairs Cafe GROOVY is present. Those are useful orientation notes within or above the same address, but the operator does not promise that every online item is on the shelf. Check whether a confection contains narazuke or alcohol before buying it as a child-friendly gift, and check allergens and shelf-life on its own package. This guide does not count the alley, online store, other branches or cafe as extra researched venues.
Use the shop's current clock, not the older directory hour
The company's direct-store page lists its main shop as 10:00–18:30 with no regular closing day, no parking and phone 0742-22-8039. It estimates three minutes on foot from Kintetsu Nara Station and ten from JR Nara. The prefectural English directory was updated in November 2025 yet still displays 9:00–21:00, a major conflict with the operator's current page. Plan around 10:00–18:30 and check directly before a late visit; 'no regular closing day' does not rule out temporary closure. The operator lists credit cards, PayPay, iD, transport e-money and Rakuten Edy for this main shop; verify payment at the till.
Understand what the on-site history means
The operator says it began making narazuke in the early Meiji period and has remained on Higashimuki-dōri as a Nara souvenir specialist. Its product history says several vegetables are aged through repeated transfers in sake and mirin lees, turning amber over time. These are company claims about its craft, not proof that the present storefront or each product has the same age. The prefectural guide independently identifies the same main shop and address, but uses a different opening schedule. Ask staff for the current product's origin, flavour profile and best way to carry it; no factory visit or tasting appointment is promised by the shop listing.
