Kohechi is the mountain link between Kōyasan and Kumano Hongū in the UNESCO-listed Kii pilgrimage network. It passes through Totsukawa, but the marker here cannot represent the whole cross-prefecture trail. The route's narrow valleys, high passes and small lodging settlements make the journey quite different from a short stop at Hatenashi hamlet. Tanabe City's Kumano Tourism Bureau gives a four-day walking model with nights in Kōyasan, Ōmata, Miura-guchi, Totsukawa Onsen and the Hongū area. It explicitly recommends the trail only for experienced walkers and asks visitors to build lodging and transport into the full itinerary before departing.
Connect two sacred regions without flattening the history
UNESCO lists Kohechi as a component of the Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range. The route joins Buddhist Kōyasan to the Kumano shrine region, crossing Nara's deep mountain villages. Tanabe City's tourism bureau dates its development to the 13th–14th centuries as both pilgrimage and transport. This was a working route between communities, not merely a scenic trail invented for modern hikers. Its full journey should not be confused with the shorter Hatenashi settlement walk already described separately on MyNara.
Budget days and accommodation before kilometres
The tourism bureau's planning table gives four walking sections of roughly 17 km, 19 km, 20 km and 15 km, with long ascents, descents and limited transport between villages. Its route overview calls the whole walk more than 65 km; other tourism maps use roughly 70 km because map alignment and endpoint definitions differ. Do not turn either rounded total into a promise of exact daily mileage. Book Miura-guchi lodging particularly early: the bureau says it has only two accommodation options and may determine whether the itinerary works at all. Food, water, luggage transfer, dietary requests and onward buses also need advance planning.
Treat the Nara crossing as an alpine-style day
The Miura-guchi to Totsukawa section traverses Miura Pass before dropping to the hot-spring settlement; the following Totsukawa-to-Hongū day crosses Hatenashi Pass and the ridge hamlet. The bureau's difficulty table gives about 20 km and 7.5 walking hours for the former, and about 15 km and 7.5 hours for the latter, before rests. Those are planning estimates for a fit unladen walker in good weather, not a timetable or assurance for a visitor with luggage. Use the bureau's segment maps and elevation charts, and know where a day's actual lodging is located relative to the marked route.
Recheck closures, season and mountain safety
The bureau says Kohechi's northern passes are technically closed from mid-December to mid-March because of snow, while the southern Hatenashi Pass can be used year-round in suitable conditions. Its live safety page also reports a detour on the north side of Obako Pass because of a landslide; that notice must be rechecked at the time of travel. Weather, trail damage and bus arrangements can change suddenly. Carry maps offline, tell someone your plan, start early, check daily forecasts and never use this article as sole navigation for a mountain crossing.
