Hotel New Wakasa positions itself as a small Japanese inn near Todai-ji and Nara Park. Its 22 rooms include Japanese-modern rooms, family-oriented layouts and rooms with private open-air baths; the operator describes some rooms as looking toward Todai-ji and Mount Wakakusa. A rooftop garden, dining room and children's area make the property suitable for travellers who want to stay close to the park but need hotel facilities for a family. One important distinction for bath-seeking visitors: the official site describes its large bath as an artificial mineral bath using Koumeiseki, not a natural hot spring flowing from underground. The hotel offers seasonal kaiseki meals and Yamato chagayu breakfast, so it can be more than an overnight base, though meals and special rooms depend on the selected plan.
Choose a room around your group and bathing preference
The official room list includes private open-air bath rooms, a special room with bath and sauna, modern Japanese rooms, and a children's room. Room sizes, views and capacity vary; the operator's English room pages give specific occupancy for each room. Some rooms look toward Todai-ji or Mount Wakakusa, but the view depends on the selected room and should be confirmed during booking. Compare the room plan and actual sleeping arrangement for your group rather than assuming every room has tatami or a private bath. Current prices are date- and package-dependent in the live reservation system.
Know what kind of bath is offered
The inn has a large public bath, footbath and a private cypress bath that the operator currently lists at ¥3,500 before tax (¥3,850 including 10% tax) for 50 minutes; its FAQ confirms advance booking is available. It describes the public bath water as an artificial mineral-bath system using Koumeiseki and explicitly says this is not a natural hot spring from underground. Rooms with private open-air baths are separately priced accommodation plans. Ask whether the private bath needs advance booking and whether time slots are available on your date; do not call the facility a natural onsen in an itinerary.
Plan meals and dietary requests before arrival
The official dining page presents seasonal kaiseki cuisine using Nara ingredients, including Yamato vegetables and Yamato pork, and a Japanese breakfast featuring Yamato chagayu cooked with roasted tea. The main dining room is called AKARI; a rooftop-view restaurant is reserved for specific plans. The hotel asks guests with allergies, vegetarian or vegan requirements to consult in advance and says it may not be able to meet every request. Its FAQ says to contact the inn in advance for allergy needs; ask directly about the exact meal and avoid assuming a same-day change is possible. Verify which meals are included in the room plan, serving venue and current menu before booking. The listed hotel check-in begins at 16:00, so coordinate dinner arrival with the reservation desk.
Walk from the station and use parking within its time window
The hotel is at 1 Kitahandahigashi-machi, Nara City, about a ten-minute walk or five-minute taxi ride from Kintetsu Nara Station, according to the operator. Todai-ji and Nara Park are nearby, but steep or uneven approaches around the park can affect the actual route for wheelchairs and strollers. The property lists parking for up to 40 cars and six buses, free from 16:00 check-in until 10:00 checkout; use outside that window may incur a separate fee. The FAQ asks guests to note parking needs when booking. Check-in is 16:00, latest check-in 22:00, and check-out is 10:00. Confirm access or vehicle size with the hotel before arrival.

Do not reuse the inn's guest-room, bath, meal or guest photos without permission. Ask before photographing the dining room, bath areas, staff or other guests. Follow bathing etiquette and keep private bathing reservations within the assigned time. MyNara has not inspected room conditions or the rooftop view in person.

Kasuga Wakamiya Onmatsuri 2026
Kasuga's annual four-day December festival reaches its 891st edition on December 15–18, 2026. On December 17, the Owatarishiki procession is scheduled to leave the prefectural government area at noon and reach the Otabisho after travelling through central Nara; the Otabisho Festival begins around 14:30, followed by performances into the evening. The 2026 guide lists an official viewing stand at Todai-ji Enchi in front of the prefectural office (¥2,000, 11:30–12:30), as well as seats at the first torii and Otabisho. Other seats cost ¥5,000–¥10,000; same-day allocation depends on remaining seats. The published booking period runs through December 14; verify live availability and weather updates. The midnight Sengyo-no-gi is conducted in darkness: photography and personal lights are prohibited.
Check organizer informationWakakusa Yamayaki 2027
The 2027 edition is officially scheduled for Saturday, January 23. The sacred-fire procession leaves Tobihino at about 17:05 and passes Mizuya Bridge at about 17:25 en route to Nogami Shrine. The organizer identifies Kasugano Enchi and Ukigumo Enchi among the free public viewing areas in Nara Park; tickets are required for the paid foothill gate and Nara Park Bus Terminal rooftop zones. Free areas are expected to be very crowded, and the organizer prohibits leisure sheets and reserving spaces in all viewing areas. Individual public ticket prices are not yet published and are expected in early November. Mizuya Chaya is by the bridge, but the organizer does not identify the shop as a venue or viewing area; opening and access during the procession are unconfirmed. Weather or safety instructions can change the event. Nara Okuyama Driveway's Shin-Wakakusayama Course will close from 14:00 to 20:00, while the Takamadoyama Course remains open; this is a traffic restriction, not an event at the driveway.
Check organizer informationNara Tokae Lantern Festival
The organizer's official FAQ lists August 5–14 each year, and the Nara City Tourism Association describes this as a summer festival held across Nara Park. The organizer's area guide explicitly identifies Sarusawa Pond and the 52-step approach as one of its venues. In 2026, the nine venues also included Ukimido and Sagi Pond, Nara National Museum's forecourt, Kōfuku-ji, Tōdai-ji, Kasuga Taisha, and other park areas. Some venues open only on specific days; rain, strong wind or other conditions can cancel part or all of the display. Check the current year's venue map, dates and crowd guidance. The general notice does not state an admission charge; optional candle-lighting experiences may have separate terms.
Check organizer informationUneme Festival
At Uneme Shrine beside Sarusawa Pond, a procession and a pair of music-bearing boats honour the spirit of a court lady in local legend. Kasuga Taisha's official annual calendar identifies this as the festival of its subsidiary Uneme Shrine; the actual procession and rites take place at Sarusawa Pond, not at the main shrine. The festival follows the mid-autumn moon and its Gregorian dates vary; the shrine and Nara City Tourism Association publish the year's programme and viewing details. Sarusawa Pond Yoshidaya advertised pond-facing rooms for watching the 2023 edition, but no current or later viewing offer is confirmed; ask the inn about the specific year's rooms and availability.
