Kakinohazushi Tanaka's Nara main store sits by the Gyoki fountain outside Kintetsu Nara Station. The company began with a family food business in Gojo, where persimmon-leaf sushi was a regional celebration food. Here the station-side shop sells leaf-wrapped pieces and other local goods, while its Kaki-no-ha Chaya offers a place to sit for sushi, tea and sweets. The counter and tea room run to different hours, so it is useful to decide whether you want a quick purchase, a meal or a pre-ordered pickup.
Unwrap a food shaped by inland Nara
The maker explains kakinoha-zushi through Gojo's distance from the coast: salted or vinegared fish, rice, a persimmon leaf and pressure made a compact food for gatherings before modern refrigeration. The leaf is a wrapper and aroma, not an instruction to eat the leaf or a promise that modern sushi can be carried indefinitely. The company's late-Meiji family origin and 1973 incorporation are business dates, distinct from the older regional dish. Ask which fish and seasonal variants are in stock if ingredients or allergies matter.
Choose between tea room and takeaway
The operator currently lists retail hours of 9:00–19:00 but Kaki-no-ha Chaya service only from 11:00–16:00; it warns that hours may change without notice. Its Nara-store page advertises a ¥1,700 sushi assortment lunch and ¥480 soft persimmon dessert, while seasonal special menus can change what the tea room serves. The prefectural directory still lists the shop as opening at 9:30 and gives 12 seats, so use the operator's newer shop page for the 9:00 start and confirm today's service. Check the live menu and availability, not just the retail opening time.
Reserve a box if timing matters
Tanaka offers web ordering for pickup at participating stores and telephone reservations. Its FAQ says a web order placed by 16:00 the previous day can be ready the next day at the earliest, but some products take longer. That is a purchase reservation, not a dining-table booking. For an onward train, check the product's expiry, storage instructions and collection time before paying; the maker's general sushi guide says its standard persimmon-leaf sushi is dated through 20:00 on the third day including production, but the label on the exact box governs your purchase.
Use the shop's practical visitor services
The store page lists an accessible toilet with baby-changing space, umbrella loan, a small Nara book collection and a luggage-holding service, plus charging in the tea room. These are operator-published services that may depend on staffing and space, so ask before relying on luggage storage or a charging socket. There is no store parking. The entrance is opposite the station-side Gyoki fountain at the beginning of Higashimuki shopping street, making this a useful meal stop before or after the eastern sights rather than a remote detour.
Treat photographs and dietary needs as individual requests
The official page shows interior and food photographs, but MyNara has no permission to reproduce them. If you want your own photograph, ask staff first and avoid other diners. Fish, soy, egg or other ingredients may differ by item and season; the web menu alone is not a complete allergy declaration. Contact the store for current ingredients, vegetarian possibilities, seating and any accessible-route needs before making the meal essential to your itinerary.
