Higashimuki is a covered shopping arcade immediately west of Kintetsu Nara Station. Its location makes it a practical first or last stop: step out of the station, get oriented, and choose between a meal, a small shop visit or continuing south toward Sanjo-dori and Naramachi. The arcade association explains the name through the street's east-facing layout: the former grounds of Kofukuji occupied the eastern side, so houses stood on the west and faced east. The association presents this as the origin of the name; treat it as a local account rather than a claim established here from archaeological evidence. The arcade is a district, not one shop. Opening times, payment, language support and accessibility differ by tenant, and individual businesses may already have their own MyNara pages.
Use the arcade to get oriented
The covered street begins by Gyoki Plaza outside Kintetsu Nara Station and runs south through Higashimuki. It is an easy place to pause after arriving, look for a meal or browse a small shop before walking farther into the city. Nara City Tourism Association estimates about one minute from the station; Visit Nara's directory says about three minutes. These are directory estimates to the arcade, not a timed route to every shop. Follow station signs for the arcade and check the destination's own map pin.
Notice how the street meets the temple precinct
Higashimuki's name means 'facing east'. The shopping-street association connects it with Kofukuji's former grounds east of the street and the east-facing houses on its western side. This gives the arcade a useful place in Nara's city layout: commercial streets grew alongside a religious precinct, and the station now brings visitors to that same edge of the historic centre. The name explanation is attributed to the association because the official tourism listing describes it as one theory.
Plan around separate shop schedules
The arcade itself does not have one shared opening time or holiday. Restaurants and retailers set their own hours, last orders and days off, so a quiet or partly closed stretch is possible outside busy periods. Visit Nara notes that the street can become crowded in the early evening. If you have a particular shop in mind, check that operator's current listing before making it the purpose of your visit. The association's directory is useful for discovery, but its own note says tenant details can change.
Treat it as a sheltered link, not a fully indoor attraction
The arcade is covered, which can make a short walk more comfortable in light rain or strong sun. It remains a public shopping street: entrances, flooring, crowding and step-free access can vary, and no current end-to-end accessibility survey was available for this guide. The nearby station and the Kintetsu Nara Tourist Information Center are separate facilities. Shops inside the arcade are also listed separately where we have verified them; use those pages for venue-specific menus, services and contact details.
Continue south on foot
After browsing, continue toward Sanjo-dori and Naramachi, or return to Kintetsu Nara Station. The arcade is close to Kofukuji and Nara Park, but the street is a useful everyday commercial approach rather than a substitute for visiting those sites. No visitor parking is listed for the arcade; use public transport or a marked paid car park and confirm its current terms. The map point here marks the directory address area, not a surveyed entrance or a promise that every tenant is open.
