The city-run Fujiwara-kyō Exhibition Room was opened in 2006 near the former palace's Daigokuden precinct. It is a practical first stop because the capital's streets and halls are difficult to read from today's open field. Its one-to-one-thousand model, roughly seven by six metres, brings the ancient grid into view alongside excavated columns and tiles. This is the city's room on the second floor of a JA agricultural building in Nawatecho. The Nara National Research Institute's Fujiwara Palace Site Museum in Kinomotocho is a different, separately operated exhibition farther east.
Orient yourself with a model, then go outside
Kashihara City places a large 1:1,000 reconstruction model at the centre of the exhibition. Compare the central palace, roads and surrounding city with the open ground you will actually walk. A model represents an interpretation from excavated evidence; it is not proof that every building has survived or can be traced on the surface. The room also has panels about the Asuka–Fujiwara heritage area, real excavated architectural material and a video presentation of the former capital.
Distinguish the two Fujiwara exhibition rooms
This city room's practical role is visual orientation by the palace site, with the model, audiovisual displays and a flower information corner. The national research institute's Fujiwara Palace Site Museum is in Kinomotocho, farther east, and shows excavation research in a working institute campus. Both have free general admission, but their addresses, weekly closure patterns and walking approaches differ. Search for 橿原市藤原京資料室, not simply 藤原宮跡資料室, when navigating here.
Build an honest day around the bus and weather
The city says a community bus from Yamato-Yagi reaches its named stop in about twenty minutes; verify the current timetable, last return and holiday service. JR Unebi, Kintetsu Miminashi and Kintetsu Unebigoryōmae are each about thirty minutes away on foot. A rain, flood or storm warning can trigger a same-day room closure under the city's published rules. The open palace ground has few toilets, and the city specifically points visitors to facilities at this room.
Use the correct entrance and parking
The room is upstairs in the JA building at 178-1 Nawatecho. Its regular hours are 09:00–17:00 with last entry at 16:30, closing on Mondays or the next weekday if Monday is a holiday, and from 25 December through 5 January. General entry is free. Drivers must use the designated E car park north of the building; the spaces immediately in front of the building are not visitor parking. The city lists thirty ordinary-car places and separate bus spaces, without advance parking reservations.
A small souvenir has a separate distribution rule
The city also distributes a free Fujiwara-kyō manhole card at this room. Since 1 April 2026, the room is the distribution point for the 'Yomigaeru Fujiwara-kyō' design; the separate Ryu design is issued at Kashihara Navi Plaza. The city states one card per person, no reservation, holds or mail delivery, and warns that weather alerts may suspend distribution when the room closes. Ask the city about current stock rather than treating the card as guaranteed.
