Kanko Hotel Tamaru is a long-running Japanese-style hotel on the north side of Nara Park, close to Todai-ji and the Nara Prefectural Government offices. The operator says the hotel opened in 1960 and has 26 tatami-room guest rooms. This is a practical base for visitors who want to reach the park early, return for a communal bath, and walk to several central heritage sites rather than changing hotels each night. The experience is closer to a traditional inn than to a compact city business hotel: rooms are Japanese-style, meals are served in a large hall, and a shared bath is available in the evening. Room plans, meal inclusion, prices and cancellation terms vary by booking channel, so check the selected plan before paying.
Wake up within walking distance of the park and temples
The hotel places Todai-ji's Great Buddha Hall about five minutes away on foot and Nara Park Bus Terminal about five minutes away. Its own route page estimates roughly ten minutes on foot from Kintetsu Nara Station; JR Nara is about eight minutes by taxi, and a route bus to Imakōji stop leaves a three-minute walk. These are the hotel's published estimates, not guaranteed journey times; allow more time for luggage, crowds, weather and the route you choose. Its location works especially well for an early park walk before the busier daytime visit.
Choose a Japanese-style room that fits the group
The operator lists 26 rooms, all Japanese-style, across six room types ranging from 10 to 20 tatami mats. Every room has a private bath and toilet; some use a separated bath-and-toilet layout and others a combined unit. The hotel states an overall maximum capacity of 160 people and markets itself to couples, families and groups. Bedding configuration, child rates, room availability and the final price depend on the exact plan; check the current booking inventory rather than inferring these from room size alone. Free Wi-Fi is listed in every room.
Plan dinner and breakfast as part of the stay
The hotel describes seasonal kaiseki meals using Nara ingredients such as Yamato pork, Yamato beef, Yamato chicken, kakinoha-zushi, Miwa somen and local fruit. It also lists a Shokado-style lunch box and a Japanese breakfast. Dinner seating is offered at 18:00, 18:30 or 19:00; breakfast at 7:00, 7:30 or 8:00. Meal service is tied to the chosen plan, so confirm whether dinner and breakfast are included and when to arrive. The hotel asks guests to give at least three days' notice for child meals or its listed allergy-menu requests; those are not a guarantee for every allergy or cross-contact risk, so discuss requirements directly before booking.
Use the public bath, and know its limits
A communal bath is open from 16:00 to 23:00 and has a published capacity of up to 20 people. The hotel explicitly says it is not a hot spring; private room baths are available at other hours. A 90-tatami-mat hall is used for meals, group events and banquets. The property is a three-storey reinforced-concrete building. Its FAQ says there is an entrance ramp but no elevator, so guests must use stairs to reach guest rooms and banquet facilities; staff may assist within their capabilities. Contact the hotel before booking if step-free room access or mobility support is important.
Book around the hotel's actual terms
The official FAQ asks guests to reserve at least five days ahead. Check-in is 15:00–22:00 and check-out is by 10:00; early check-in and late check-out are not available. The hotel does not provide station pick-up. For direct phone or official-site reservations, the cancellation table begins charging from five days before arrival, with the percentage depending on group size and date; third-party booking channels can have their own rules. Five ordinary cars' worth of parking are available by advance reservation, first come first served, at ¥500 per night. Confirm the parking space before driving, and use nearby paid lots if it is full.

Photo notes
No photo-use licence has been secured from the hotel or tourism sources. Use original, documentary-style imagery of the hotel's actual exterior, Japanese-style tatami room or communal bath only after obtaining permission; do not imply every room has the same layout or show guests without consent. Avoid presenting stock or generated room imagery as the hotel's real room. Do not photograph other guests in private or bathing areas.
SEASONAL CALENDAR
Events connected with Kanko Hotel Tamaru: A Japanese-Style Base beside Nara Park
These records are shared with MyNara’s event calendar, so dates and notices have one source. Recurring patterns are not confirmed dated editions; check the organizer’s latest guidance.
Wakakusa Yamayaki 2027
The 2027 edition is officially scheduled for Saturday, January 23. The sacred-fire procession leaves Tobihino at about 17:05 and passes Mizuya Bridge at about 17:25 en route to Nogami Shrine. The organizer identifies Kasugano Enchi and Ukigumo Enchi among the free public viewing areas in Nara Park; tickets are required for the paid foothill gate and Nara Park Bus Terminal rooftop zones. Free areas are expected to be very crowded, and the organizer prohibits leisure sheets and reserving spaces in all viewing areas. Individual public ticket prices are not yet published and are expected in early November. Mizuya Chaya is by the bridge, but the organizer does not identify the shop as a venue or viewing area; opening and access during the procession are unconfirmed. Weather or safety instructions can change the event. Nara Okuyama Driveway's Shin-Wakakusayama Course will close from 14:00 to 20:00, while the Takamadoyama Course remains open; this is a traffic restriction, not an event at the driveway.
Check organizer informationTōdai-ji Shuni-e and Otaimatsu (2027)
Tōdai-ji's 1,276th Shuni-e is listed for March 1–14, 2027 at Nigatsu-dō. The Nara City Tourism Association's current notice says Otaimatsu viewing is generally permitted March 1–14 except March 12, but viewing areas have capacity limits: once the main lawn and plaza fill, visitors are directed to a second viewing area, and viewing ends when that area also fills. On March 12, visitors should avoid attending because severe crowding is expected; the second area can close when full and listening inside the hall is limited to authorised people. The temple says schedules and restrictions can change. No booking or event fee is stated in the checked notices; verify the latest temple guidance before travel. Do not photograph or record where the temple prohibits it.
- Admission
- No event-specific fee is stated in the checked notices; confirm any separate admission arrangements with Tōdai-ji.
- Booking
- No reservation process is stated. Viewing is capacity controlled and may stop when both designated areas fill; on March 12 the temple asks people to avoid attendance and limits hall listening to authorised persons.
Nara Tokae Lantern Festival
The organizer's official FAQ lists August 5–14 each year, and the Nara City Tourism Association describes this as a summer festival held across Nara Park. The organizer's area guide explicitly identifies Sarusawa Pond and the 52-step approach as one of its venues. In 2026, the nine venues also included Ukimido and Sagi Pond, Nara National Museum's forecourt, Kōfuku-ji, Tōdai-ji, Kasuga Taisha, and other park areas. Some venues open only on specific days; rain, strong wind or other conditions can cancel part or all of the display. Check the current year's venue map, dates and crowd guidance. The general notice does not state an admission charge; optional candle-lighting experiences may have separate terms.
