Gose City Cultural Property Exhibition Room
A small municipal archaeology gallery interpreting local sites from the Jōmon through Kofun periods, including Miyayama Kofun.

Gose City Cultural Property Exhibition Room is a compact companion to the city's ancient landscapes. Its permanent display introduces archaeological material from local sites, spanning the Jōmon and Yayoi periods into the Kofun period. The city's current outline specifically lists Miyayama Kofun among the sites represented. Because the room is small and its objects change over time, it works best as a focused interpretation stop before or after seeing a site outdoors—not as a guaranteed replica of the arrangement in an older video.
Follow local archaeology across several periods
The city groups its planned display by archaeological period: Jōmon sites such as Kannonji Honma and Tamate; the Yayoi-period Kamo-tsuba site; and Kofun-period sites including Kamo-tsuba No. 1, Miyayama and the Koseyama cluster. The sequence helps place the great tomb within a much longer local history. Current labels, objects and display order can change.
Use the gallery for Koseyama context; do not hike to No. 323
Gose City's cultural-property record identifies Koseyama Kofun No. 323's distinctive horizontal stone chamber, but explicitly says visitors cannot tour the cluster because its internal paths are undeveloped. The exhibition room offers a town-level archaeology context; the current visitor notices do not say that a No. 323 object is on display. Do not treat the 323 guide-map point, an old tourism listing or filming access as an invitation to enter the hills. Check the dated exhibition schedule before visiting this gallery.
Connect the room with Miyayama Kofun
Gose City's current exhibition-room guide confirms that its permanent display includes material from Miyayama and cautions that the objects shown can change by period. Nara Prefecture describes the tomb as a 238-metre National Historic Site and summarizes finds from its south chamber; these provide context for the city gallery's Miyayama section, not proof that the original objects are currently on display here. Objects in a past display arrangement are not guaranteed to remain on view.
Expect a small local-history gallery
The municipality describes it as a small exhibition room. It is useful for a focused look at Gose archaeology and may be paired with other sites in the area. No multilingual interpretation, guided-tour schedule, shop, café or accessibility details are stated in the reviewed visitor notice; contact the Cultural Properties Division if any of these are essential to your visit.
Understand why Jō Urugami Kofun matters
Gose City describes Jō Urugami Kofun as a late-Kofun-period burial with a huge side-entry stone chamber and a house-shaped stone coffin carved from one block. The chamber is comparable in scale to Ishibutai Kofun, while the coffin's eight rope-lifting projections are an unusual feature. The buried person's identity is unknown; the city presents a powerful Kose-clan leader as a possibility, not a confirmed name. The 2026 exhibition compares this tomb with nearby Jōike South and North Kofun to explore their chambers, coffins, construction dates and possible relationships. Visitors see archaeological evidence and interpretation in the gallery, not the sealed burial chambers.
Check the current special-exhibition period
Gose City's 2 October 2026 notice says the permanent display is unavailable from 22 October 2026 through 22 March 2027 while the room changes to special exhibitions. It schedules 'The Jō Urugami Kofun and the kofun of Jō' from 1 November through 28 December 2026, daily 09:00–17:00, free admission. The city says this exhibition brings together finds, survey photographs and drawings to compare Jō Urugami Kofun with the nearby Jōike South and North Kofun; listed objects include Sue ware, iron objects, gilt-bronze items, beads and sarcophagus fragments. It traces research, designation and preservation planning, so it offers archaeological interpretation rather than access into the tombs themselves. This dated visitor offer does not establish that the room is open during installation before 1 November or throughout the later changeover. Check the current city notice before travelling. The permanent display is planned to reopen 23 March 2027.
Find the office at Muro 102
The listed address is Muro 102, Gose City, and the municipal page supplies a map and contact number 0745-60-1608. For the dated 1 November–28 December 2026 special exhibition, the city lists a five-minute walk from the Nara Kotsu Miyatobashi stop or the community-bus Muro stop. That notice is not a year-round timetable; confirm current service and the entrance before travelling. The city gives no dedicated parking statement, and the step-free route has not been verified.
