Mizuyachaya is a working teahouse in a wooded corner of Nara Park, close to the foot of Mount Wakakusa and a short walk from Kasuga Taisha. Its thatched roof, streamside setting and red-covered outdoor benches make it feel very different from the busy streets around Kintetsu Nara Station. Visit Nara lists udon and soba, traditional sweets and seasonal refreshments such as shaved ice; the operator's current page confirms the location and opening schedule but does not publish a menu or prices. Treat the setting as part of a Nara Park walk, rather than planning around a particular dish or seasonal colour that may not be available on your date.
Make it a pause on the Kasuga–Wakakusa walk
The teahouse sits between Kasuga Taisha and Todaiji, on the park side of the city where paths begin to feel quieter and more wooded. The operator says it is about a one-minute walk from Kasuga Taisha and the foot of Mount Wakakusa; from Kintetsu Nara Station, the Official Nara Travel Guide estimates about 25 minutes on foot. Use the stop to break up a longer visit, not as a substitute for checking the distances and access arrangements at the shrine or mountain themselves.
Choose a simple meal or a traditional sweet
The Official Nara Travel Guide describes hot udon and soba in winter, shaved ice in summer, and traditional Japanese sweets. It lists a 15:00 last order for the udon menu and 15:30 for the full menu. The operator's page currently gives a general 15:30 last order but does not show individual dishes, prices, allergens or seasonal availability. Ask at the counter about the day's menu and ingredients, especially if you have dietary restrictions; older online menus and visitor photographs may no longer match what is served.
Decide whether to sit indoors or outside
Visit Nara describes a few tables inside and red-covered benches outside, with parasols on sunny days; its directory lists a capacity of 40. Outdoor seating gives a close view of the stream and surrounding trees, while the compact indoor room offers shelter. Seating is not guaranteed, and the listing does not describe step-free access, child facilities or a reservation process. If these details matter to your visit, contact the shop before setting out.
Time your visit around the current schedule
The operator lists 11:00–16:00, last order at 15:30, and Tuesday and Wednesday closures, with a calendar for exceptions. Visit Nara gives a 15:00 last order for udon and notes public-holiday exceptions to the regular closures. Because those details can differ by menu or date, check the operator's calendar on the day and arrive well before closing if you want food. The directory also lists cash-only payment; the operator page does not confirm payment methods, so bring cash or call ahead rather than assuming cards or mobile payments are accepted.
Plan the approach and respect the park setting
The address is 30 Kasuganocho, Nara City. The operator says it has no customer parking or bicycle parking and asks visitors to use nearby paid parking. Walking from Kintetsu Nara is the clearest published public approach; confirm current bus stops and service with Nara Kotsu if you do not plan to walk. The teahouse is in a public park landscape shared with wildlife and other visitors: keep paths clear, do not feed or crowd deer, and ask before photographing staff or other guests. Check the weather, since the outdoor benches are exposed to seasonal conditions.

Photo notes
No image-use permission has been secured from the operator or Visit Nara. Do not reuse their photographs without permission. If creating original imagery, depict the real low thatched-roof teahouse beside a small stream in a quiet Nara Park woodland setting, with modest red-covered outdoor benches; avoid cinematic lighting, invented architecture, staged deer, or implying a particular seasonal bloom. Ask before photographing staff or customers and keep paths clear.

These records are shared with MyNara’s event calendar, so dates and notices have one source. Recurring patterns are not confirmed dated editions; check the organizer’s latest guidance.
Wakakusa Yamayaki 2027
The 2027 edition is officially scheduled for Saturday, January 23. The sacred-fire procession leaves Tobihino at about 17:05 and passes Mizuya Bridge at about 17:25 en route to Nogami Shrine. The organizer identifies Kasugano Enchi and Ukigumo Enchi among the free public viewing areas in Nara Park; tickets are required for the paid foothill gate and Nara Park Bus Terminal rooftop zones. Free areas are expected to be very crowded, and the organizer prohibits leisure sheets and reserving spaces in all viewing areas. Individual public ticket prices are not yet published and are expected in early November. Mizuya Chaya is by the bridge, but the organizer does not identify the shop as a venue or viewing area; opening and access during the procession are unconfirmed. Weather or safety instructions can change the event. Nara Okuyama Driveway's Shin-Wakakusayama Course will close from 14:00 to 20:00, while the Takamadoyama Course remains open; this is a traffic restriction, not an event at the driveway.
