Rokuen is a protection facility for Nara's deer, not a petting zoo. For groups, the Nara Deer Preservation Foundation offers a guided visit about the deer and a separate workshop using real deer antler to make a strap. The programme shifts the focus from the familiar street encounter to the work of caring for sick or injured animals and helping people understand how deer live around a city. The foundation asks groups to reserve in advance; a private traveller or small walk-in party should not expect to join an open session.
Choose one activity or combine both
The guided Rokuen visit takes about 30 minutes and uses staff explanation and exhibits to introduce deer history, ecology and protection work; the facility may also provide a view of animals in care, but this is not a guaranteed close encounter. The antler-strap workshop takes about 30 minutes and uses real antler from Nara deer while staff explain deer ecology. Combining the tour and craft takes about an hour. Both activities are led by the foundation, and the workshop is a small educational craft rather than a retail shopping stop.
Understand what a conservation facility is
The foundation says Rokuen cares for deer under treatment and animals that cannot return to the park, as well as deer kept temporarily to prevent human-wildlife conflict. The group tour introduces that work and the deer as protected wildlife. It does not promise that every animal or area will be visible; care routines and recovery needs come first. Visitors should follow staff instructions, keep a respectful distance and not feed, touch or try to attract the deer.
Book for the required group size and a single daily slot
The foundation's current programme page accepts groups of at least 10. It says only one group is conducted each day and takes reservations up to a year ahead, while applications must reach the foundation at least one month before the requested date. The antler workshop accepts up to 30 people per session; contact the operator about larger parties, school groups and the number of simultaneous sessions. Ordinary opening windows shown are 10:00–12:00 and 13:00–16:00, but the operator must confirm an exact time. Year-end holidays and deer-antler-cutting dates can be unavailable; other exceptions require consultation.
Compare the listed group prices
For general groups, the foundation lists ¥500 per person for a guided tour, ¥500 for the strap workshop, or ¥1,000 for the combined programme. Its school-trip table lists ¥500 for each single activity and ¥800 combined for standard school groups; schools within Nara Prefecture receive a free guided tour, ¥500 craft or ¥500 combined. Nara Prefecture's school-trip portal separately lists the combined school programme at ¥800. These are group programme rates and may not apply to an individual walk-in. The foundation states programme income supports deer protection.
Use public transport and keep the visit within the booked area
Rokuen is at 160 Kasuganocho, on the Kasuga approach in Nara Park. From Kintetsu Nara Station, the foundation estimates a 30-minute walk; from JR Nara Station, about 40 minutes. Its suggested bus route uses Kasuga Taisha Omotesando, then about seven minutes east on foot. There is no dedicated parking. The workshop is on the grounds of a working conservation facility, where access to animals and staff-only areas follows the operator's instructions. Ask about the exact group meeting point, path conditions and accessibility when booking.
