Before heading into Hōryū-ji, stop at the tourism centre on the approach to work out the rest of Ikaruga. Its precinct model and recreated roof tiles give useful orientation to the temple landscape; a display of tools associated with master carpenter Tsunekazu Nishioka adds another way to read the timber buildings. More importantly for a day trip, this is where travellers can ask about current local routes, pick up maps, borrow a wheelchair subject to availability, hire an ordinary bicycle, or leave a bag for collection later the same day. It is a visitor facility, not the temple's ticket office or an additional World Heritage monument.
Use the model before choosing your route
The two-storey tile-roofed centre houses an information counter, a model of Hōryū-ji's precinct, recreated historic tiles and a display of carpenter Tsunekazu Nishioka's tools that the centre says has resumed. These exhibits help distinguish Hōryū-ji's western and eastern precincts before a longer walk toward Chūgū-ji, Hōrin-ji or Hōki-ji. Pick up a current town map and ask staff to check a particular bus or attraction opening rather than treating an old leaflet as today's schedule. The shop sells local goods, but availability changes and entry to the information centre is free.
Rent a regular bicycle, not a discontinued e-bike
The operator lists nine 26-inch and one 24-inch regular rental bicycles. Posted rates are ¥200 for the first hour and ¥200 for each additional hour, capped at ¥1,000 for five hours or more in one day; its two-day price is ¥1,600. Booking is not accepted, so a bicycle is first-come, first-served and never guaranteed. The centre separately announced that its electric-bicycle rental ended on 16 February 2025. A distinct app-based share-cycle service appears on its site, with different availability and terms; do not confuse that with this staffed rental.
Leave a bag only for a same-day return
Since June 2025 the centre has advertised staffed baggage holding for ¥500 including tax per item. Collection must be on the same day; this is not overnight storage and no bag-size or liability terms were verified in the reviewed notice. Check the counter's acceptance and retrieval cutoff before paying, especially if a late bus or train is involved. The centre's regular opening is 8:30–18:00, but that does not independently establish a later baggage-service cutoff. Station lockers are a separate option.
Find rest and accessibility facilities
The operator lists an accessible toilet equipped for ostomate users, a nursing room, free wheelchair lending, NARA Free Wi-Fi Lite, power outlets and an AED. Wheelchair availability and the accessibility of every onward temple route need confirmation; the centre's facilities do not mean historic temple halls are step-free. Ask staff about the specific route and the day's transport. A rest space and multilingual maps can also be useful between temple visits. Do not assume every staff member can give a guided tour in a particular language.
Arrive at the correct information centre
From the north exit of JR Hōryūji Station the operator estimates about 15 minutes on foot. From the south exit it lists Nara Kotsu route 72 to the Hōryūji Sandō terminus immediately by the building; check that route's current operation and fare before travel. The centre itself has no car park. Its site points drivers to an adjacent privately operated lot, currently quoted as ¥500 per ordinary car per visit between 8:30 and 18:00; parking availability is not promised. The JR station's smaller information desk has its own hours and must not be mistaken for this building. The centre address is 1-8-25 Hōryūji, Ikaruga.

Special Hōryū-ji West En-dō and Fujinoki Kofun Tour (2026)
Ikaruga Town lists this two-date programme as one of the main projects in its new cultural-property initiative. On November 22 and 28, a cultural-property specialist guides visitors through Ikaruga Cultural Heritage Center and Fujinoki Kofun's normally closed stone chamber, followed by a monk-led visit to Hōryū-ji's West En-dō. This rare access is by a booked tour only; the tomb chamber and hall do not thereby become generally open to visitors.
