Unakiku Nara: Eel Rice beside Kasuga's First Torii
Compare eel over rice, a lunch set or a night-only eel course at a separately bookable restaurant inside Kikusuiro's grounds.

Kikusuiro's long-established ryōtei and Unakiku occupy the same Takabatake-chō grounds but serve different meals through different booking desks. Unakiku presents Edo-style eel, with bowls and lacquered rice boxes as well as lunch sets, night courses and takeaway. The operator's own menu is detailed enough to plan a budget, although prices and dishes can change. Allow time for the correct entrance and for a made-to-order meal; do not carry the ryōtei's Tuesday-and-Wednesday closure or ¥16,500 kaiseki price over to this eel shop.
Choose how to eat the eel
The current operator menu describes a one-eel unajū rice box with soup and pickles, a mamushi-don with one and a half eel, and an ainose box served with dashi soy sauce and condiments. It explains mamushi as eel tucked between layers of rice. A diner who wants a lighter portion or several side dishes can compare the lunch-only Kiku-gozen: a half-eel box with small dish, eel custard, soup, pickles and sweet. These are different choices within one restaurant, not separate attractions. Ask staff how the fish is prepared on the day and whether white-grilled eel or liver soup changes the final bill.
Use menu prices as dated examples
On the Nara branch's web menu checked 19 October 2026, the standard one-eel rice box is ¥4,800, mamushi-don ¥6,300 and ainose box ¥4,900, marked tax-inclusive. The lunch-only Kiku-gozen half-eel set is ¥3,700, with the one-eel version ¥5,700. The à-la-carte page lists half-eel kabayaki at ¥2,400, half-eel shirayaki at ¥2,500 and umaki egg roll at ¥1,500. Those numbers come from the Nara branch, not the different Unakiku Tokyo outlet, and are not a guarantee of availability or of extra charges for every combination. Reopen the operator's menu at booking time.
Know when a course or reservation makes sense
Unakiku separately publishes a night-only eel course: the listed ¥9,000 eel-focused option includes preparations such as blanched eel, liver, half-eel shirayaki and rice, while lower-priced night sets also appear. Its course page limits orders to 17:00–19:00 and warns that supply can change dishes. The Nara-branch site offers its own online seat reservation and takeaway-bento ordering; unlike Kikusuiro's private-room ryōtei, the pages reviewed do not state that every Unakiku visit must be prebooked three days ahead. Its phone service uses an automated voice first and can transfer to staff on request. The site says seats are normally limited to ninety minutes; confirm timing and any course reservation rule directly.
Plan the stop by the first torii
The shop lists lunch from 11:00 with final entry at 14:45, dinner from 17:00 with final entry at 19:00, and Tuesday as its usual closure. These are last-entrance times, not closing times; the main Kikusuiro homepage separately lists a 20:30 end and a 19:30 last order for Unakiku. A dated 2026 notice moved the Tuesday holiday service to a different weekday once, showing why the chosen date should be checked. Its access page estimates seven minutes on foot from Kintetsu Nara and places it within Kikusuiro at 1130 Takabatake-chō. Roughly fourteen parking spaces are shared, unreserved and not assured; nearby paid parking is at the guest's expense.
Respect food and image limits
Eel, soy-based condiments, egg dishes and possible fish-stock soup make this a poor place to infer vegetarian or allergy-safe options from menu photos. A child, religious or medical dietary request requires a direct answer from staff. The site presents the cultural-property setting as part of the experience, but it does not establish that a visitor can tour the adjoining ryōtei's private rooms.
