Kuboji is an eight-room ryokan in Dorogawa's old onsen street. Its own guide gives practical detail that a traveller can use: the bath switches between men's and women's sides, some traditional rooms are offered for accessibility needs, dinner choices change by season, and the road via Kawai is safer than a narrow satnav suggestion. Nara's English directory lists a different street number and earlier check-in/later checkout, so a date-specific confirmation from the inn is necessary before building a cave or hiking itinerary around it.
Book an actual room and meal plan
The operator shows tatami rooms with futons and free room Wi-Fi, and says it has a room described as barrier-free that should be requested at booking. It gives eight rooms overall, but publishes no measurements for doorways, bathroom turning space or the continuous route from street to bath. A guest requiring step-free facilities should obtain room-specific details rather than rely on the label. The food page describes seasonal boar hotpot, chicken hotpot, tofu kaiseki using tofu from a nearby maker, and a summer BBQ option; these are plan examples, not a single menu served every day. Confirm whether dinner is in-room or elsewhere, ingredients, child meals and dietary accommodations for the actual reservation.
Use the bath rotation to plan an outdoor soak
The operator lists a rock outdoor bath attached to one shared bathing area and a second indoor bath. The two sides exchange men's and women's access at 21:00 and again at 09:00. Its stated bath windows are 16:00–23:00 and 06:00–10:00, but the detailed schedule on the same page shows the outdoor side only through 09:00 in the morning. Ask for the current schedule, especially if the outdoor tub matters. A separate bathing tax is listed without a current amount on that page. Private reservation of the outdoor bath appears in an older prefectural description but is not confirmed by the operator's current bath page, so do not rely on it.
Follow the inn's arrival and winter-route instructions
The operator's access page lists check-in from 15:00 with a 19:00 final arrival and checkout by 11:00. Visit Nara's 2025 entry instead says 14:00 and noon. Plan to reach the inn before the operator's current final arrival unless it explicitly accepts a later time for the chosen booking. The road guide warns that some navigation systems offer a narrow Prefectural Route 48 via Kurotaki; it directs drivers along Route 309 through Tenkawa Kawai, then Route 21. It states ten free parking spaces, but availability is not a reservation. For winter it warns of snow and calls for chains. Check current road conditions before setting out.
Separate the rail journey from the village walk
From Kintetsu Shimoichiguchi, the inn estimates about seventy minutes on the Dorogawa Onsen bus to the last stop. The public timetable varies by season, and the final village walk must be checked with luggage and weather in mind. The operator's walk-through photographs show a turn by the tourist information office onto Gyoja Street; an old village map estimates the inn around ten minutes from the bus stop. A taxi journey is mentioned as around forty minutes from Shimoichiguchi, which is an estimate and needs an actual quote. The coordinate is a guide point, not a surveyed entrance.
Read dated listings with care
The inn's homepage still contains a Go To Travel promotion, so page elements can outlive their validity. Its cuisine page lists a group day-use meal-and-bath example and old option prices without a dated 2026 booking offer; this is not proof that individuals can visit for the bath or that those amounts still apply. The village's older lodging leaflet gives historical rates only. The operator and a village lodging list both give Dorogawa 221, while Visit Nara gives 211 but the same phone number. Use 221 and the business name when navigating, then confirm the entrance, room price, meal availability, tax and cancellation terms with the inn.

Dorogawa Gyoja Festival
Dorogawa's Gyoja Festival recalls the village welcoming back En-no-Gyōja, the legendary founder of mountain ascetic practice. Tenkawa Village describes the August 2–3 programme as including oni and comic dances, and Ryūsen-ji lists its annual August 3 programme. The village's 2023 report describes a busy public festival with many performers and tourists but gives no attendance figure. The festival is centred on Dorogawa's streets and approach to the temple, not inside Menfudo Cave or the Eco Museum Center; check the next year's route, times, traffic and weather notices.
