Shika Saru Kitsune Building stands at the Naramachi birthplace of Nakagawa Masashichi Shoten, a craft and household-goods company founded in 1716. The name joins the company's deer with the monkey of Sarutahiko Coffee and the fox of restaurant Kitsune. Rather than one single shop or museum, it is a small cluster of working businesses and visitor spaces: the Nara flagship store, a local-culture information desk, coffee, sukiyaki, Salon Naramachi tea, a 300-year archive and a hands-on hemp-textile space. The operator says the complex opened in 2021 beside its historic founding site. Plan time to browse each component, and check the individual tenant's hours: the building does not have one shared closing time.
Read the building as a cluster, not a single attraction
The official shop list names Nakagawa Masashichi Shoten Nara Main Store, Nara Fudo Information Desk, Sarutahiko Coffee, Kitsune, Salon Naramachi, Toki-gura and Nuno-gura. These offer different activities: craft shopping and displays, local travel information, food and drink, a company-history archive and bookable making experiences. Their hours differ. For example, the official building page lists the main shop and information desk 10:00–19:00, Toki-gura 10:00–18:00 and Sarutahiko Coffee 09:00–19:00; restaurants have separate meal periods. Check the tenant you plan to visit before setting an arrival time.
Connect the craft displays with Nara's living traditions
Nakagawa Masashichi Shoten traces its business to 1716 and the trade in Nara sarashi, a fine hemp cloth. The flagship store discusses mosquito-net cloth, Nara crafts and locally made goods; its feature page also describes a library of 100 books selected around walking, food and ways of living in Nara. Toki-gura presents the company's history, while Nuno-gura uses looms and materials to introduce hand-spun, hand-woven hemp. These are different ways to encounter the same craft story: looking, reading and making. The operator describes the 130-year-old townhouse elsewhere in the complex; do not assume that every room or building fabric dates to that age.
Use the experience calendar and language notes
The operator publishes a monthly schedule for its guided tour, textile workshop and Salon tea experiences. In the October 2026 notice, the Nuno-gura workshop lasts 70–80 minutes, costs ¥3,850, is for ages 10 and up, has a four-person capacity and is guided in Japanese only. The free building tour is about 20 minutes, also capped at four and Japanese-only; the tea ceremony is booked through Peatix. These are dated details, not permanent rates or availability. The operator's autumn fifth-anniversary programme adds dated events: ancient-rice mochi making is listed for 31 October, 3, 14 and 21 November, 11:00–15:00, free and without booking (weather permitting); a mosquito-net-cloth napkin-stamping workshop is listed on selected dates through 29 November, 11:00–18:00, final reception 17:30, ¥550. Check the linked programme for that day's schedule and remaining materials. Read the current month listing before booking, and do not assume English guidance. Toki-gura's historic display does not require advance booking according to the operator's experience page.
Approach on foot and leave time for the lanes
The building's address is 22 Ganriin-cho, Nara City. The operator estimates seven minutes on foot from Kintetsu Nara Station and 15 minutes from JR Nara Station. There is no dedicated car or bicycle parking; use a public paid lot or cycle parking nearby. Naramachi's lanes are narrow, so a map pin is not a promise of a barrier-free path. Ask the operator about step-free access to a particular tenant or activity if stairs, thresholds or seating height are a concern.
