Hyōtarō's shop sits on Yoshino Mountain beside the copper torii, a useful food stop on a pilgrimage and cherry-blossom route. The operator traces its business to 1970 and describes mackerel cured with salt, pressed with rice and persimmon leaves so the flavours settle by the following day. It also makes salmon, but in smaller quantities. That difference affects a visitor more than an abstract product list: mackerel is the usual shop purchase, while salmon may require advance reservation. Opening days vary with season and the shop can sell out, especially when Yoshino is crowded.
Place the shop in a Yoshino walk
The operator locates the shop at 429 Yoshinoyama beside the copper torii, close to the route toward Kinpusen-ji. It gives 1970 as the founding year and says the founder began selling from this location. The torii is part of a religious landscape, but a sushi purchase does not grant access to temple buildings or special rites. Use the shop as a food stop between sites, keeping the sacred and commercial spaces distinct. The Nara Visitor Bureau separately lists the same Yoshinoyama business and location.
Choose mackerel or plan for salmon
The maker says its mackerel is traditionally cured with salt and that its sushi tastes most integrated the day after making. Its product page also offers salmon, but warns that salmon-only packs are not prepared for casual immediate purchase and need an advance order; even mixed packs beyond the usual ten-piece option may need reservation. The operator’s product page currently lists mackerel packs from ¥1,400 (8 pieces), mixed mackerel/salmon 10 pieces at ¥1,850, and salmon 10 pieces at ¥2,000. Some prices changed from 1 October 2026 because of salmon procurement costs. Treat the live product page as a dated reference and confirm stock and the current displayed price before travelling for a particular box. Fish, rice and seasonings mean a dietary or allergy question should go directly to the maker.
Let the calendar, not a generic footer, decide your day
The detailed shop page says 09:00–16:00 or sell-out, with season-dependent weekly closures: cherry-blossom April can operate daily; November and December generally close Monday; other periods generally close Monday and Tuesday, with holiday shifts. Summer and New Year breaks may add dates. The site's generic footer compresses this to a Monday closure, and the operator publishes monthly calendars. Use the current monthly notice and, for an important pickup, telephone 0746-32-3070. The October 2026 calendar lists closures on 20–21 October and other specific dates; it supersedes the generic seasonal rule for that month. A blossom-season walk can be busy enough to limit stock before 16:00.
Pre-order while you walk uphill
The operator's FAQ says visitors can arrange a hold before climbing Yoshino Mountain and collect the sushi on the way down, when stock exists. The contact page also accepts advance pickup enquiries. This is a useful way to avoid carrying a food box for the whole walk, but the shop may close when sold out, so agree a collection time rather than assuming it will remain open. Shipment is a separate domestic service with its own ordering deadlines and restrictions; do not assume international delivery from an online-store link.
Use rail and the mountain approach carefully
The shop advises travelling to Kintetsu Yoshino, then taking the Yoshino ropeway to the upper station and walking about ten minutes. Ropeway operation is outside the sushi shop's control and may change with weather or maintenance; check it independently and plan the descent. The shop page says it has no dedicated car park. Do not treat a road shoulder beside the shop as assured lawful parking; use current Yoshino public parking information and walk if driving. The map coordinate is an approximate centre of the operator's embed, not a parking entrance.

Kakinoha-zushi Fair (2026)
Thirteen Nara persimmon-leaf sushi brands gathered at Heijō Palace Site's Tenpyō Mitsuki Hall for tastings, hands-on sushi making, a fast-wrapping championship, a history lecture and a makers' panel. A report by participating company and committee member Izasa says about 5,000 people attended; Nara TV independently reported long queues and early sell-outs. The committee's detailed programme reserved hands-on activities and lecture tickets on the day; tasting portions began at ¥100. Hyōtarō and Tokuoka appear on the official 2026 vendor list, but their products were sold at this off-site festival, not at their shops. This first edition has ended and does not alone establish a recurrence.
