Hotel Subaru: Overnight at Totsukawa Onsen
Stay in Hiratani for an onsen base, selecting a room and meal plan with care before the long bus or mountain-road approach.

Hotel Subaru is an overnight base in Totsukawa's Hiratani valley, sharing a site with Hoshi-no-yu, a pool, a free footbath and the hand-pulled Yaen crossing. Its room choices matter: the standard twin and ten-tatami Japanese room have no private bath, while the larger special room has its own cypress spring bath. The operator's current site also shows a booking engine and seasonal meal plans, but an old directory budget label cannot tell you what a particular night costs. Confirm the actual room, dinner, arrival route and accessibility before committing to a remote stay.
Match the room to how you bathe
The operator lists a twin room for one or two guests, a ten-tatami Japanese room for two to five, and a larger ten-plus-six-tatami special room for two to seven with a private cypress bath. It says the twin and ordinary Japanese rooms have a toilet and basin but no in-room bath; guests use the communal hot spring. The six-tatami room remains on the information page but is not in general sale. All rooms are described as non-smoking. Check the exact plan and whether sleeping arrangements or step-free access suit your party, rather than treating every photograph as every room.
Dinner is a reservation decision
The hotel's cuisine page presents seasonal kaiseki and a breakfast with tea porridge, and its FAQ gives dinner start choices of 18:00, 18:30 or 19:00. The contents and prices depend on the date and booked plan. Some lunch service is offered to day visitors at Restaurant Shakunage, but that is not automatically included in a room booking. The FAQ says allergy adjustments are limited: it cannot accommodate wheat or gluten-free requests, bonito/mackerel broth exclusions or certain egg allergies, and it cannot guarantee removal of traces in a shared kitchen. Contact the hotel at booking if food safety is essential.
Build the trip around the arrival, not just the address
The hotel's access guide puts 909-4 Hiratani on the Route 168 side of the village and estimates roughly four hours by Yagi–Shingū bus from Yamato-Yagi to the Hotel Subaru stop. Check today's bus operator timetable and mountain-road notices, especially if arriving after dark. The facility page says check-in begins at 15:00, check-out is 10:00 and guests should contact reception when arriving after 18:00. It separately mentions a pre-booked free pickup from Totsukawa Onsen bus stop; do not assume it runs without a reservation or from every stop.
Use shared facilities without merging their rules
A stay can include the hotel's baths and, according to the FAQ, use of the indoor spring-water pool, but day-bath and day-pool guests have separate admission rules. The hotel also describes a free outdoor footbath and a one-person Yaen ropeway nearby; each has its own safety or availability considerations. Two official hotel pages disagree on parking capacity (100 versus 180 spaces) and on pool-equipment rentals. Because the operator has not reconciled them, this guide gives neither a guaranteed parking count nor a promise to rent swim gear; bring your own and ask the hotel.
What to look for

Subaru-no-Sato Summer Festival
Totsukawa Village's annual calendar places this late-August Saturday festival at the multipurpose field of Subaru-no-Sato in Totsukawa Onsen. The 2024 village report records about 1,800 visitors for that edition; this is a past-edition figure, not an annual attendance estimate. Dance preservation groups from across the village gather, including performers of Totsukawa-no-Ō-Odori. The village acknowledged the 2026 edition after it took place.
