A traveller can bathe at Subaru-no-Sato without booking a room. Hoshi-no-yu is the day-bath facility attached to Hotel Subaru in Hiratani, not a generic name for every bath in Totsukawa Onsen. The operator currently gives a 12:00–17:00 day-use window, cash-only admission and a free outdoor footbath for people who only want a short stop. Those conditions differ from the hotel's overnight stay, the indoor pool and the separate village-run Iori-no-yu, so choose the right facility and ticket before making the long trip south.
Choose the day bath, not the whole resort
Hotel Subaru's FAQ explicitly accepts non-staying visitors at Hoshi-no-yu. The operator describes indoor and outdoor bathing, including cypress and ceramic tubs; the prefectural tourism bureau lists the bath as its own visitor venue. The outdoor footbath is free, but that does not include full bathing. The hotel's indoor hot-spring pool also has its own hours, admission and maintenance closures. Treat these as facilities within one complex, not interchangeable tickets or separate baths in different villages.
Plan around a short afternoon window
The operator lists day bathing from noon until 17:00 at ¥1,000 for adults and ¥500 for children aged four through elementary school, with cash payment only. Its FAQ warns of reduced hours at Golden Week, Obon and New Year. Other official sources disagree on exactly how much shorter: the prefectural tourism record says 16:00, while the village public-facilities register says 15:00. Do not plan a holiday arrival around either unconfirmed cutoff; call 0746-64-1111 for the actual date. A hotel guest's bathing access need not share the public day-use timetable.
Understand what the hot spring claim means
The operator says its baths use spring water without recirculation, heating or added water, and explains that the feel of the water may change with the weather. The wider Totsukawa Onsen area announced a source-flowing policy in 2004, but the regional declaration is not a separate certification of every current operating detail. This is a bathing experience, not a treatment for a medical condition. Ask staff about bathing restrictions, temperature, tattoos and accessibility if any is important to your visit.
Get to Hiratani and keep the timetable realistic
The prefectural English listing and hotel FAQ point to the Hotel Subaru stop on the Yagi–Shingū bus route. The hotel's access page estimates around four hours by bus from Yamato-Yagi and stresses that village public transport is infrequent. Check the bus operator's current outward and return service before relying on a day trip. The directory coordinate identifies the resort grounds, not a verified accessible entrance or car park bay; follow signs on arrival and ask staff if the path is unclear.

Subaru-no-Sato Summer Festival
Totsukawa Village's annual calendar places this late-August Saturday festival at the multipurpose field of Subaru-no-Sato in Totsukawa Onsen. The 2024 village report records about 1,800 visitors for that edition; this is a past-edition figure, not an annual attendance estimate. Dance preservation groups from across the village gather, including performers of Totsukawa-no-Ō-Odori. The village acknowledged the 2026 edition after it took place.
