The old station building gives arriving visitors a useful first stop before the city's temples and neighbourhoods. Built in 1934 and later reused as the Nara City Tourist Information Center, it lets travellers step into a piece of railway history while asking practical questions about the wider prefecture. The center's visitor services are not all available for the same hours: staff assistance ends earlier than the building's daily opening, and luggage handling, currency exchange and pass sales have their own cutoffs. Use it to check routes and pick up current maps, but confirm a specific service before making it the only option in a tight connection plan.
Read the building as part of the arrival
This is the former JR Nara Station building, rather than the ticket gates of the operating station. Nara City identifies the building as a 1934 structure and the Nara City Tourism Association notes its reuse as a tourist information center. Its central hall and historic station form make it a modest architectural stop as well as a service point. The building is beside JR Nara Station, so visitors can orient themselves before heading east toward Naramachi or the bus and taxi connections. The nearby current station concourse is a separate building.
Arrive during the staffed information window
The center lists building access from 09:00 to 21:00 every day, with staffed tourist information from 09:00 to 17:00 and an unmanned information area from 17:00 to 21:00. Japanese, English, Chinese and Korean are listed for the information counter. The unmanned evening period is not a promise that staff can answer questions, arrange a tour or help with a ticket. Year-end schedules can change. If your question depends on a live train disruption, a remote destination's last bus or a same-day reservation, check directly with the relevant transport or attraction operator as well.
Check the cutoff for the service you need
The tourism association lists luggage storage from 09:00 to 16:00, with reception ending at 14:00; foreign-currency exchange to 19:00; bus-pass sales and wheelchair lending to 16:00; and the prayer room from 09:00 to 17:00. A baby-care room is listed to 21:00, and free Wi-Fi is available. These are separate service windows, not one general closing time. Nara City announced that its special same-day luggage-delivery initiative ended on 31 March 2026. Although the current tourism-association page still lists luggage storage, check the center's latest terms and charges before relying on storage or delivery, and do not assume the former delivery program continues.
Use the station location to connect onward
The center is at 1082 Sanjo-honmachi, directly in front of JR Nara Station. That makes it a practical arrival point if you are coming by JR, changing to a bus or deciding whether to walk toward central Nara. Kintetsu Nara Station is farther east; plan that leg using the current map and service information rather than treating both stations as the same place. The center's listed wheelchair loan, baby-care room and prayer room can help with trip planning, but the building-level listing does not establish a complete step-free route or availability on the day. Ask staff about your specific access needs while the counter is open.
Separate the center from other tourist desks
The Nara City Tourist Information Center at JR Nara is different from the Kintetsu Nara Station desk and the former Nara Visitor Center & Inn near Sarusawa Pond. Nara Prefecture confirms that the Visitor Center & Inn closed on 31 March 2026, so old guides describing its prayer room, exchange services or cultural workshops as currently available there are out of date. The JR-station center is an information and travel-service stop; its current listing does not promise a regular calligraphy, origami or tea workshop. Check the Nara City Tourism Association's current activity calendar for bookable cultural experiences elsewhere.

The prize-draw goal is in front of Nakagawa Masashichi Shoten Sanjo on Sanjo-dori; it is not one of the Higashimuki shop venues. Confirm the official point list and each shop's opening before visiting. The 2026 edition ends November 9; no 2027 dates are confirmed.
