Nakatanido sells yomogi mochi, a soft Japanese rice cake kneaded with mugwort and filled with sweet red-bean paste. The quick pounding visible at the shopfront has become a familiar sight on Sanjo-dori, but the maker says the pace is a traditional method for finishing hot steamed rice while it is pliable, rather than a performance staged to a timetable. The shop opened in Nara in 1992; its owner connects the technique to the village of Kotochi in Kamikitayama, Yoshino, where he grew up. Buy a piece while it is fresh, then let the small shop be a short stop on a walk between Kintetsu Nara Station and Naramachi.
Watch the craft without expecting a showtime
Nakatanido explains that the team pounds steamed glutinous rice while it is still hot, coordinating the mallet and the turning hand to make a smooth, stretchy cake. The speed helps the maker work the rice before it cools; the shop explicitly says it is not performing for an announced show. It pounds according to sales and demand. The operator says there is no fixed schedule; ask staff at the shop if you hope to see a session, and keep clear of the working area and the flow of pedestrians.
Taste the local connection
The operator traces the method to Kotochi, the owner's home area in Kamikitayama Village, Yoshino. Yomogi (Japanese mugwort) gives the dough its green color and herbal aroma; the filling is anko, sweet red-bean paste, with kinako (roasted soybean flour) listed among the ingredients. This is a confection, not a full meal. The maker's product page lists 3 pieces for ¥600, 6 for ¥1,200 and 10 for ¥2,000; check the live page before relying on those prices or stock.
Plan for freshness and limited availability
The operator says the mochi's shelf life is the day of purchase and that it does not ship the fresh product. The shop may close early when it sells out, so a late visit is uncertain. Ask the staff directly about current stock, ingredient or allergen details, and take-away handling. The official information does not establish a tasting room or seating; plan to eat elsewhere if you need a place to sit.
Find it on the central shopping street
The shop is at 29 Hashimotocho, on the Nara city-centre route between Kintetsu Nara Station and Naramachi. The operator gives about a five-minute walk from Kintetsu Nara Station; Visit Nara uses the same estimate. Its frontage can attract a crowd when pounding is underway. Enjoy from a safe position without blocking the pavement, shop entrance or traffic; follow staff directions and do not cross barriers for photographs.
