Nara Okuyama Driveway is a privately operated toll-road system, not one continuous road with a single fee. From the Shin-Wakakusayama Gate, a 3.7-kilometre climb reaches the Mount Wakakusa summit parking area and can be driven back the same way. The longer Kasugaokuyama route continues through the forest road toward Takamadoyama and has different hours, road rules and shared traffic. A third route serves Takamadoyama and its Manyo poetry and stone-Buddha viewpoints. Reading the map and choosing the correct gate first prevents a scenic drive from turning into an unexpected one-way forest passage or missed exit window.
Choose among three different road experiences
The operator describes the Shin-Wakakusayama Course as a 7.4-kilometre return drive to the summit, the full pass-through as a 13-kilometre route, and the Takamadoyama Course as a separate 10.6-kilometre route. The summit route gives views over Nara Basin and the city; the Kasugaokuyama segment passes through the World Heritage forest landscape; the Takamadoyama route connects with viewpoints, Manyo poetry and historic stone Buddhas. These are road itineraries, not interchangeable hiking trails.
Compare tolls and gate times before setting off
For a standard passenger car, the operator currently lists ¥700 for the Shin-Wakakusayama return route, ¥2,110 for the full pass-through and ¥800 for the Takamadoyama route (¥600 one way where one-way use is offered). The published windows are 05:00–23:00, 09:00–16:30 and 08:00–18:30 respectively. The Shin-Wakakusayama exit gate closes at 01:00; a vehicle inside after that cannot exit until it reopens. Motorcycle, microbus and large-vehicle tolls differ. Recheck the operator's live table before driving.
Know what is beyond the summit car park
The operator says the summit car park has a vending machine and toilet, and the summit viewpoint is about 300 metres farther along a sloping path. It describes that path as suitable for strollers and wheelchairs; this is the short summit approach, not a statement that the full hill or forest road is step-free. The summit is 342 metres high. Visitors can see the Nara basin and the Uguisuzuka Kofun, a 103-metre keyhole-shaped burial mound whose occupant is unknown. Do not enter or climb the mound for a photograph.
Treat the forest road as a shared, restricted route
The Kasugaokuyama section is an unpaved one-way public road managed in part by Nara Prefecture. The operator warns that pedestrians, bicycles and motorcycles also use it; drive slowly and obey staff and signs. Weather, ice, storms, repairs or an official closure can change access. Some waterfalls and stone-Buddha sites require leaving the car and walking; check the separate trail conditions and do not assume a roadside stop is accessible to every visitor.
Match the access plan to the route and light
The Shin-Wakakusayama Gate is near Shosoin, north of central Nara Park; the Takamadoyama Gate is a separate southern entrance. The car road is not a bus substitute for every part of the mountain. The operator promotes a reserved taxi plan and Nara Kotsu's seasonal Wakakusa Hilltop Bus for visitors without cars; check those providers directly for current dates, price and availability. At night, the summit path has footlights, but the operator recommends carrying a flashlight. Keep to marked stopping areas and never stop or cross where it obstructs traffic.

No operator or third-party photo is licensed to MyNara. Stop only in marked parking areas; the operator warns that roadside photography and crossing the road can obstruct or endanger traffic. These records are shared with MyNara’s event calendar, so dates and notices have one source. Recurring patterns are not confirmed dated editions; check the organizer’s latest guidance.
Wakakusa Yamayaki 2027
The 2027 edition is officially scheduled for Saturday, January 23. The sacred-fire procession leaves Tobihino at about 17:05 and passes Mizuya Bridge at about 17:25 en route to Nogami Shrine. The organizer identifies Kasugano Enchi and Ukigumo Enchi among the free public viewing areas in Nara Park; tickets are required for the paid foothill gate and Nara Park Bus Terminal rooftop zones. Free areas are expected to be very crowded, and the organizer prohibits leisure sheets and reserving spaces in all viewing areas. Individual public ticket prices are not yet published and are expected in early November. Mizuya Chaya is by the bridge, but the organizer does not identify the shop as a venue or viewing area; opening and access during the procession are unconfirmed. Weather or safety instructions can change the event. Nara Okuyama Driveway's Shin-Wakakusayama Course will close from 14:00 to 20:00, while the Takamadoyama Course remains open; this is a traffic restriction, not an event at the driveway.
