Naramachi Guesthouse is a traditional wooden townhouse in the southern part of Naramachi, a short walk from JR Kyobate Station. The operator says the house is about 100 years old and was lived in by generations of calligraphers; it presents the renovation as a way to stay inside the historic merchant-town fabric rather than in a modern station hotel. The key current detail is that the property changed in July 2024 to an exclusive whole-house rental with three guest rooms and a garden-facing shared living space. An older Visit Nara page, last updated in November 2025, still describes the previous hostel arrangement with separate dormitory rooms. This guide follows the current operator information and flags the directory as outdated.
Book the entire house, not an individual dorm bed
The operator says that since July 2024 the three-room house, its approximately 30-tatami living space and its Japanese courtyard garden are rented together. Room pages describe a 20-square-metre ten-tatami room for up to four, a 16-square-metre eight-tatami room for up to three, and a 15-square-metre 7.5-tatami room for up to two. Those individual room capacities add to nine, but the pricing page also refers to parties above nine and a per-person supplement beyond ten without explaining the exact sleeping arrangement. Confirm the accepted party size and beds directly; do not infer a guaranteed nine- or ten-person capacity from room labels alone.
Read the house through its rooms and courtyard
The operator describes the house as a former calligrapher family's machiya, renovated with Kasuga cedar and laid out around a Japanese garden with a stone lantern. One ten-tatami room faces the courtyard and has a tokonoma alcove. The eight-tatami room is described as once serving as a theatre's balcony area, while the 7.5-tatami room retains a retro style. These are operator-provided stories and room descriptions; MyNara has not independently verified the building's precise age, former residents or theatre history. The house is a private rental rather than a staffed museum, so the architectural fabric is experienced as accommodation and must be treated with care.
Check the displayed price and payment conditions
The operator's current room page lists a whole-house price of ¥36,000 for up to three people, ¥40,000 for four, ¥48,000 for five, ¥56,000 for six, ¥63,000 for seven, ¥70,000 for eight and ¥73,000 for nine, tax included. It then says an additional ¥3,000 per person for groups over ten, leaving the exact ten-person amount unstated. The page says payment is in cash at check-in. It lists cancellation charges of 50% for cancellation the day before and 100% on the day or for a no-show. Because the page does not show an effective date and its occupancy language is ambiguous, verify the dated booking quote and cancellation terms before confirming travel.
Plan arrival through Kyobate rather than assuming a central-station walk
The closest listed rail stop is JR Kyobate, about five minutes on foot. From JR Nara the operator estimates 20 minutes walking or describes a local circular bus to Kita-Kyobatecho; from Kintetsu Nara it estimates 15 minutes walking, with the same bus stop as another route. The operator notes that Kyobate trains are two cars long and only the first car's doors open at that station, a practical detail for boarding from JR Nara. The Nara Prefecture Visitors Bureau's older record gives similar walks from Kyobate and longer estimates from the central stations. Confirm current bus times and railway service for your date, especially with luggage.
Use the kitchen and garden while respecting a residential street
The operator lists two shower rooms, two toilets, sinks, Wi-Fi, room air-conditioning, refrigerator, microwave, toaster and basic kitchen utensils. It lists bicycle rentals from ¥500 for a standard bicycle to ¥1,000 for a sports bike, plus towel and yukata rentals; ask whether these services still operate under the current exclusive-rental model. The prefectural association page lists Tuesday and Wednesday as holidays and reception/luggage service hours, but those details may belong to the former shared-hostel setup and should not be assumed for a whole-house booking. The current operator site sends reservations to Booking.com and asks guests to coordinate arrival time and luggage drop.
Connect the stay with Naramachi's temple-and-town history
The house is at the edge of Naramachi, whose historic street pattern grew over land once associated with Gango-ji. The current Nara Prefecture guide explains how the temple's early precinct was gradually reduced as housing expanded. From this base, plan a separate visit to Gango-ji and the Naramachi streets, then continue toward the park if time allows; these are different stops with their own access, admission and opening conditions. The guesthouse's own statement that it stands on the former Saeki-in site connected with a relative of Kūkai is not independently verified in the sources reviewed here and is not presented as settled history.

Photo notes
The machiya, garden, room and interior photographs on the operator and directory sites have not been licensed to MyNara. Request permission before photography, especially for the courtyard and private rooms. Do not stage visitors on fragile timbers or imply that a generated garden image is a documentary photo of this house. Ask the host about interior photography rules after booking.
