Nishinokyō's temples are spread beyond a single station exit. Nako's small bicycle-rental desk offers a way to link them without treating a sample map as a fixed tour. The useful detail is the calendar: this desk advertises rental only on weekends and public holidays from March through November. Its standard bicycles, limited stock and return choices make it worth checking the day's operation before taking a train there solely to hire a bike.
Check the season before designing a ride
Nara Kotsu's Nishinokyō-specific page lists 09:00–17:00, with the final loan at 16:30, only on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from March through November. The prefecture's cycling directory repeats the same operating pattern and places the desk just outside Nishinokyō Station's east exit. It lists six standard bicycles and one electric bicycle, but the operator's more specific current rental page prices only standard bicycles and its general equipment page explicitly says electric-assist bikes cannot be used at Nishinokyō. Treat the electric-bicycle count in the directory as stale until the desk confirms a real available vehicle.
Choose a return plan before you leave
The operator posts ¥1,000 for a one-day standard bicycle and says it can be returned at its Kintetsu Nara or Yamato-Saidaiji rental desks. The ¥800 three-hour standard-bicycle option must go back to the desk that lent it, and the operator excludes coupons for that shorter rental. Those terms matter more than straight-line distance: a three-hour visit to several temples needs enough time to ride back to Nishinokyō before closing. Confirm the current return point's hours and any extra handling conditions at pickup; the website's general online reservation interface lists only Kintetsu Nara and Yamato-Saidaiji, so do not assume an online Nishinokyō reservation is possible.
Build a route around real temple entry times
The operator names Yakushi-ji, Tōshōdai-ji, the Emperor Suinin tomb area, Kikō-ji and Saidaiji as nearby points for a ride. Each is a separate place with its own hours, admission and cycle-parking rules. A practical short outing might combine two temples rather than rush all five; check temple notices and your return time first. The operator's sample route times assume a bicycle travelling at 15 km/h and are only estimates. Traffic, crossings, parking and time inside buildings can make the actual journey much longer.
Prepare for cycling conditions rather than expecting a tour
This is a bicycle rental, not a guided excursion. The operator asks riders to check brakes, tyres, bolts and saddle fit before departure, ride on the left, obey signs and lock the cycle when leaving it. It tells customers to bring their own helmets: free helmet lending is listed only at the Kintetsu Nara and Saidaiji desks, in limited numbers, not here. Its terms assign repair costs after punctures and damage to the rider and ask riders to contact the lending point after an accident. Read the full current rental terms and ask about insurance coverage before setting off.
