The Prefectural Museum of Art broadens a Nara visit beyond ancient temples. It opened in March 1973 after painter and cultural-history researcher Yoshikawa Kanpō donated Japanese paintings, ukiyo-e and craft material. Later gifts and acquisitions added medieval and modern painting, textiles, ceramics and avant-garde work. The prefecture now describes a collection of more than 4,600 items, but only a selection appears in each changing exhibition. Start by choosing the current show: a collection exhibition and a special exhibition have different ticket prices and sometimes different opening arrangements.
See why a costume researcher shaped the collection
Yoshikawa Kanpō studied manners and dress as well as painting. His approximately 2,000-piece collection includes ukiyo-e and textiles that help explain how people dressed and represented daily life from the Edo to Meiji periods. The gift led to the museum's 1973 opening. If pieces from this group are on show, look at clothing, image and social setting together rather than assuming every work is Buddhist art.
Follow distinct collections, not one permanent display
The prefecture also identifies the Yura Tetsuji group of medieval-to-early-modern painting and crafts, the Ōhashi Kaichi group of around 500 postwar avant-garde paintings, and about 200 works by Nara-born potter Tomimoto Kenkichi. These are collection holdings, not a fixed circuit. The museum's online collection database and exhibition page help identify what is currently displayed before a trip.
Choose the current exhibition and its price
A normal collection show costs ¥400 for adults and ¥250 for university students, with group rates for twenty or more. A special show's fee depends on that exhibition. Through 15 November 2026, two shows share one special-exhibition ticket: a survey of modern Japanese painting, including works by Shōda Kakuyū and Uenaka Chokusai, and a Tomimoto Kenkichi centenary presentation. The latter displays about 40 works, including 33 newly donated pieces from the collection of his childhood friend Imamura Arao; examples range from decorated porcelain panels to a 1953 bottle. The common ticket is ¥1,200 general and ¥1,000 university; visitors under 18 are free. These are dated details, not a standing price. Check the exhibition pages before going. The free gallery and shop do not guarantee the paid exhibition rooms are open.
Check eligibility rather than relying on an old directory discount
The current prefectural tariff lists free entry for under-18s and pupils in Japan, plus some specified disability-card holders and companions. Visitors 65 or older have free collection-show admission on weekdays, but pay the adult rate for special shows. The older English prefectural directory broadly says foreign visitors are free, which the newer museum tariff does not state. Do not rely on nationality alone for a discount; bring relevant proof and check the official rules.
Fit the museum into a station-based walk
The museum is at 10-6 Noboriojicho, around five minutes east of Kintetsu Nara Station Exit 1. From JR Nara, the prefecture suggests a bus from the east-side stop to Kenchō-mae. It has no dedicated car park. The 9:00–17:00 museum day ends with final entry at 16:30, and Monday, exhibition changeovers and New Year are closure periods. This makes it a possible first cultural stop before walking east into the park, if the live exhibition calendar confirms it is open.
