Le BENKEI opened in December 1975 on land the restaurant identifies as part of Koriyama's former samurai quarter. Its approach to French dining grows from local produce rather than treating Nara as a decorative backdrop: the operator describes Yamato vegetables from contracted growers, herbs and fruit from its own garden, house-smoked ham and honey. This is a booked restaurant meal, with a separate café and pâtisserie on the same property. It suits a deliberate castle-town day or an occasion dinner, but a visitor needs to verify the booking, final price and closure calendar instead of relying on an old directory budget.
A French restaurant rooted in Koriyama
The operator dates its opening to December 1975 close to Koriyama Castle. Its history says the site was once within the castle's samurai-residence area and recalls an early experiment serving French food with chopsticks and a Tōdaiji-style tray. The present restaurant is a later renewal, not a preserved Edo-period dining room. This distinction makes the food and the location more interesting than a generic claim of 'historic interiors': the castle walk supplies the historical setting, while the kitchen makes a contemporary Nara interpretation of French cuisine.
Plan the course around ingredients, not a fixed dish list
The official menu names produce from contracted Yamato growers, the kitchen garden's herbs and fruit, house-smoked ham and honey. It describes a cellar of about 150 wines. Lunch examples include a standard course, steak, fish and Plaisir; dinner examples are Paris, Versailles and La Seine. A sample dinner progression runs from amuse-bouche through starters, fish and meat to desserts, bread and coffee. Ingredients and course composition can change with deliveries, so do not expect a specific vegetable, protein or wine to be available on every date. Give the team allergies in advance; neither a vegetarian course nor avoidance of cross-contact is confirmed by the pages reviewed.
Read the November 2026 price change before reserving
On 19 October 2026 the operator's general menu already displays ¥5,500 for the standard lunch, while its dated price notice says that course changes from ¥4,950 to ¥5,500 on 1 November 2026 and previously confirmed reservations keep the prior quote. It also warns that seasonal lunch prices vary. Other displayed lunch examples are ¥7,700 for steak or fish and ¥9,900 for Plaisir; listed dinner examples are ¥16,500, ¥22,000 and ¥33,000. The displayed prices include consumption tax but add a 10% service charge. The prefectural directory still gives much lower approximate lunch and dinner figures, which are unsuitable for a current budget. Ask the restaurant for the exact date-specific course and total, including any private-room fee, when booking.
Book the restaurant and observe its dining rules
The operator marks the restaurant reservation-required, provides telephone 0743-53-3588 and links to TableCheck, Ikyu and Pocket Concierge. Ordinary hours are lunch 11:30–15:00 with last order at 14:00, then dinner 17:00–21:00 with last order at 20:00; Monday and irregular closures apply. Its dated closure list includes additional days, so check it for the chosen visit. The dress code is smart casual, with no tank tops, shorts or sandals, and the restaurant asks men to wear jackets for dinner. The main dining room is non-smoking. The Japanese page asks families with children of elementary-school age or younger to book a private room at extra charge, while its English rendering says junior-high age or older. That contradiction should be resolved directly with the restaurant for a family booking.
Find the correct door and connect it to a town visit
The official address is 276-1 Kitakoriyamacho, with a stated 70-car parking capacity. Visit Nara estimates 25 minutes on foot from JR Koriyama and around 15 minutes uphill from the castle; it also mentions a No. 20 bus, but no current timetable or stop was confirmed for this article. Use a route planner for the date and allow time for the last order. On the same property, the operator separately lists Pâtisserie d'Ambiance and Café R/B, with their own contact numbers and different hours. Their cakes and lighter café offer are not the booked restaurant's course menu. The directory coordinate is a property marker rather than a verified entrance, accessible path or parking-bay guarantee.
