Ryuchin Falls lies along the Fukatani River above Lake Murou, with a Ryuchin Shrine precinct beside its pool. Uda City's visitor guide describes rock-strewn stream scenery and a pool whose colour shifts with sunlight. The appeal is the walk into a sacred and ecologically sensitive gorge, not a swimming hole. A practical trip starts at the Murou Dam management-office parking area and leaves enough time to walk back by the same route.
Walk to the gorge rather than driving to the falls
Uda City gives about twenty minutes on foot from the Murou Dam management office and says there is no parking at the falls. Its recommended A-to-B route is linked from the visitor listing. The dam manager gives the office itself about two kilometres or twenty minutes on foot from Kintetsu Murouguchi-Ono Station. Do not add those numbers as a guaranteed door-to-falls travel time: gradients, weather and the chosen path matter.
A shrine landscape beside the water
The city places Ryuchin Shrine's worship structures along the banks and its small precinct near the fall. The gorge is part of Murou-Akame-Aoyama Quasi-National Park. See the rock and water from the available route while treating the shrine area as a place of worship, keeping voices low and leaving space for other visitors.
Know the water rules before going
Uda City expressly asks visitors not to swim or play in the water within the shrine precinct, and prohibits campfires, barbecue and fireworks. Litter must be carried out and unnecessary contact with the protected environment avoided. The Water Resources Agency also warns that rain can raise the Fukatani stream and that insects are a concern on its longer dam-to-Murouji route. A bright pool is not evidence that entry is safe or permitted.
Fit the falls into a realistic hike
The dam manager describes a roughly three-hour walking route from Murou Dam toward Murou-ji along Fukatani Gorge, passing the Ryuchin area and including some steep slopes. Visiting only the falls from the dam office is a shorter out-and-back, but no precise total walking time or accessible path is guaranteed. Wear shoes suitable for uneven and possibly wet terrain, check conditions after rain, and arrange your return before entering the valley.
Check alerts each time
A 2025 bear-sighting restriction on both Ryuchin Gorge and nearby Fushigi Forest Park was lifted on 4 August 2025; the city's notice still advised caution. That historic lifting is not a live all-clear for future dates. Check current municipal alerts, weather and on-site closure signs shortly before the walk, especially with children or when travelling alone.

Photo notes
MyNara has no licensed photograph from the city or dam manager. Make images from the allowed trail only, without entering the pool, crossing shrine boundaries or placing a tripod where it blocks the narrow path. Light and water colour vary; avoid presenting a single vivid photograph as a guaranteed condition.
