Kashihara City Museum of Insects
Move from insect specimens to living habitats and a butterfly-filled greenhouse at this city-run museum.

This city museum opened in 1989 within Kaguyama Park south of Mount Kagu; the Agency for Cultural Affairs also records its 1989 glass-roofed building as a piece of modern public architecture. It is designed around observing insects, not merely reading labels about them. Its route moves from specimen galleries and recreated habitats to a warm greenhouse where butterflies fly among subtropical planting. A separate training wing shows aspects of breeding and special living displays. That mix makes it a useful indoor-and-greenhouse stop for families or nature-minded adults exploring the Kashihara–Asuka side of Nara, especially when weather makes an outdoor itinerary uncertain.
Follow the change from specimens to living insects
The city identifies a specimen hall, a habitat display room and a newer training wing with a breeding-information area. The specimen cases help with form and variety; the habitat rooms let visitors observe movement and behaviour. Temporary displays occupy the second-floor exhibition room, so their theme changes. Check the city calendar rather than expecting a past special exhibition to remain.
Slow down in the butterfly greenhouse
The city describes a roughly 500-square-metre greenhouse with planted paths and a stream, designed so butterflies can fly through it across seasons. It has described hundreds of butterflies in a normal display, but species and numbers change with breeding and are not a visitor-day guarantee. This is the place for patient observation rather than handling: the museum explicitly asks visitors not to touch butterflies. The city's accessibility sheet says the lower greenhouse can be viewed without steps, while upper sections have stairs; ask staff about the route that suits your group.
Budget for the right age band and season
The city lists adult entry at ¥520, high-school/university students with ID at ¥410, and children from age four through junior high at ¥100. April–September hours are 9:30–17:00 with last entry 16:30; October–March close at 16:30 with last entry 16:00. Monday is normally closed, with a holiday substitution and a summer-vacation exception. Check the current calendar for exceptional dates and confirm any student concession at the desk.
Use the bus instead of assuming a station walk
The city's October 2026 access page recommends the Kashihara community bus from Kintetsu Yamato-Yagi south exit, about thirty minutes to the museum stop. The October 2026 bus update says the weekday route connects Yamato-Yagi with the museum, while weekends and holidays extend via Asuka toward Kashiharajingū-mae; return times differ. A Sakurai-side bus needs another fifteen minutes on foot and may not run every day. Daifuku Station is around forty minutes away on foot. Drivers can use the city's approximately eighty free spaces, but should not pull up to the entrance.
Plan comfort and photo etiquette
The city lists a nursing room, two loan wheelchairs and an ostomate-equipped accessible toilet in the newer wing. These features do not make every terrace or greenhouse level step-free. Personal photography is allowed without a tripod when it does not disturb others, but the policy does not authorise MyNara to reuse city images or film commercially. Food and drinks are prohibited inside the galleries.
