Konjaku Kimono Akio is a specialist Japanese textile shop listed by the Mochiidono Shopping Street association. Its description names kinsha and chirimen silk remnants, antique kimono from the Meiji, Taishō and Shōwa periods, contemporary kimono and dressing accessories; it says the main shop also carries sarasa, hemp and cotton remnants alongside antiques. This is a place to look closely at fabric, pattern and construction, rather than a general souvenir store. The English prefectural directory calls the business Gallery Akio and mentions tea-ceremony goods and antiques, while the shopping street uses the name Konjaku Kimono Akio. Since the name and phone number differ between sources, use the Japanese name and check the current storefront details before making a special trip.
Understand the cloth names before you browse
The shopping street's current store description lists kinsha (a light silk weave), chirimen (crepe-textured silk), sarasa-patterned textiles, hemp and cotton, together with antique kimono and current dress accessories. These categories suggest a broad range of age, weave and use; they do not certify the exact fibre, date, dye method or provenance of every individual piece. Ask staff to explain a particular item and its condition. The shop directory does not publish stock photos, a searchable inventory or a price list, so availability and prices are necessarily in-person questions.
Look for both wearable items and fabric remnants
The association describes antique garments from the Meiji, Taishō and Shōwa periods as well as contemporary kimono and accessories. It separately notes that the main shop stocks antique objects and old pieces of sarasa, hemp and cotton cloth. A visitor looking for a finished kimono should say so; someone seeking a small textile for craft or study should ask whether remnants are currently available and how they are sold. No fitting, rental, tailoring, translation service or international shipping was verified, so do not assume these are part of a purchase.
Find the shop in the covered arcade
Mochiidono is a covered shopping street connecting central Nara with Naramachi. The arcade association says its entrance is about three minutes from Kintetsu Nara Station; Visit Nara estimates seven minutes to the individual shop. Those are different endpoints, and neither page verifies the exact doorway on foot. The prefectural directory gives 9 Mochiidono-chō, while the association's current shop card omits the street number. Search for 今昔きもの朱生, follow the arcade signs and allow time to locate the storefront. The map pin is a directory point, not a surveyed entrance. Walking time from JR Nara Station is longer than either Kintetsu estimate.
Confirm the current listing details
The arcade association lists 10:00–19:00 and closure on the second and fourth Thursday, with contact number 0742-20-5598. Visit Nara's English page gives the former display name Gallery Akio, the address 9 Mochiidono-chō, a seven-minute Kintetsu walk, the same hours and closure pattern, but lists 0742-24-7898 and says English information is available. The 2009 local feature repeats the older number and describes the store as Konjaku Kimono Akio. Treat the newer arcade listing as the best current lead, but verify the storefront or contact details if a phone call or English assistance is essential. Neither source establishes current card acceptance or all-day English-language staffing.
Browse carefully and ask before photographing
Antique garments and fragile textile remnants can be sensitive to handling, light and repeated folding. Ask staff before unfolding, trying on or photographing an item; no public photography policy, fitting room, preservation advice, return policy or purchase conditions were found. The prefectural visitor page says the shop has a varied selection and a bargain bin in front, but that stock and discounts change. Do not plan around a specific garment or price unless the shop confirms it.
