Hōrin-ji's monthly gathering invites participants to copy the opening 104 characters of a text associated with Myōken, the North Star bodhisattva enshrined at the temple. It is a devotional activity in the Myōken Hall rather than a calligraphy lesson or tourist performance. The operator says writing tools are provided and welcomes individual participants; no English-language instructions are advertised.
Joining this activity
The operator lists the gathering on the fourth Sunday of each month, 09:00–16:00, at Myōken Hall, with an offering of ¥3,000 per scroll. Confirm the upcoming date, whether advance contact is useful, language support and the current offering with the temple at 0745-75-2686 before travelling. A separate four-character lotus-petal copying item is also listed; this guide describes the monthly 104-character session only.
